Should You Convert Your Tub to a Shower? A Chattanooga Homeowner's Guide

A lot of homeowners sit on this decision longer than they need to. The bathtub hasn't been used in months, maybe longer, but there's still hesitation. Will removing it hurt the home's value? Is a one-day conversion actually real? What does it cost?

All fair questions. Here are the answers.

What a Tub-to-Shower Conversion Actually Involves

The basic idea is simple: the existing bathtub comes out, and a walk-in shower goes in the same footprint. In practice, that means removing the tub, prepping the subfloor and drain, installing a waterproofed shower base, tiling the walls and floor, and finishing with fixtures and, if you want it, a glass door or enclosure.

Most conversions don't require moving plumbing. The existing drain location usually works for the new shower with minor adjustment to establish proper slope. That's routine installation work, not a major plumbing job.

How Long Does It Take?

Most tub-to-shower conversions we do take one to two days. Day one covers tub removal, drain preparation, waterproofing, and backer installation. Day two covers tile and finishing work. If the tile needs extended cure time before grouting, there may be a short wait in between, but the actual labor is typically done inside 48 hours.

You won't have access to that bathroom while the work is going on. For households with a second bathroom, the disruption is minimal. We always confirm that before scheduling.

Does Removing the Tub Hurt Resale Value?

This is the question that holds more people back than any other. The short answer is that it depends on one thing: how many bathrooms your home has.

Homes with Two or More Bathrooms

Removing the tub from one bathroom, typically the master, is generally considered neutral to positive in the Chattanooga real estate market right now. Most adult buyers prefer a walk-in shower in the master bath. Listing agents in this market report it as a selling point more often than a concern, particularly in the mid-range and move-up segments that make up most of what trades in Hamilton County.

Single-Bathroom Homes

This is where we usually recommend keeping the tub or switching to a shower-tub combo instead of a shower-only conversion. Buyers with young kids consider a bathtub a practical necessity when there's only one full bathroom in the house. Eliminating the only tub can narrow your buyer pool at sale.

We ask about your plans before recommending a conversion. If selling in the next year or two is a real possibility, that factors into the conversation.

On resale returns:  Mid-range bathroom remodels in Chattanooga recover roughly 70 to 73 cents per dollar at resale. A tub-to-shower conversion falls squarely in that category, and the improvement in daily use starts the day we finish.

Shower Only or Shower-Tub Combo?

Not every homeowner who converts wants to give up the bathing option entirely. Two paths exist:

  • Walk-in shower only. The full footprint becomes dedicated shower space, which gives you the best proportions, room for a built-in bench or niche, and an open, clean look. This works best when you have a second bathroom that keeps a tub.

  • Shower-tub combination. A new alcove tub goes in, but the surround and fixtures are completely refreshed. You keep the soaking option while still transforming how the bathroom looks and functions. This makes the most sense for single-bathroom homes or houses with young children.

How the Process Works With Us

We start with a free in-home estimate. We look at your existing tub, discuss what you're hoping for, and give you a written quote that covers every line item before any work starts.

On installation day, we protect your floors, remove the tub, and build the new shower correctly from the waterproofing layer up. We don't leave a job at 90 percent while we shift crew to another site. When we finish, the bathroom is done.

Every conversion comes with a written workmanship warranty. If something isn't right after we're gone, we come back.

Signs a Conversion Makes Sense for Your Home

  • You haven't used the bathtub in six months or more

  • Your home has a second bathroom that keeps a tub

  • You want a meaningful upgrade without a full gut renovation

  • You have family members who would benefit from a safer shower entry

  • Your existing shower is cramped, outdated, or starting to show water damage

If several of those match your situation, a conversion is probably worth a conversation. The fastest way to find out is a free estimate. We serve Chattanooga, Hixson, Ooltewah, Signal Mountain, East Brainerd, Red Bank, and the surrounding area.
